What is a contract of employment?

A contract of employment is basically a formal agreement between the employer and employee about terms of work. A normal employee contract should include information such as the job title, brief description of tasks undertaken, hours and days required to work, pay rate, holidays and start and finish date of contract. Many employers put new staff on a temporary 3 month contract which is then renewed as a permanent contract if both the employer and employee are happy.

Be sure to check your contract in detail and flag up any concerns you have before you sign it as it is a legally binding document. If there are any changes in your work hours or pay etc then your contract should be updated and you will need to sign it again to agree. It is important to keep a copy of your employee contract should you need to refer to it at a later date.

Finding the right job for you

When deciding what career path you wish to take, there are many elements that you need to consider. What qualifications will you need to become the professional that you want to? Some jobs have very strict criteria of what qualifications you need to work in that profession.

Teaching is an example of this where you need a teaching degree to allow you in to the field. This will involve you going to university to study a particular subject and then doing a PGCE degree at the end. Very often people chose to do a PGCE even if they do not particularly want to teach as it is only an extra year on your other degree and allows you then to change careers at a later date if you do decide teaching is for you.

Whatever path you decide to take, you should try to pick something that you think you will enjoy doing.

Part time jobs – how do they work

Part time jobs are widely available and can include working a set number of hours or days per week. Many employers now offer part time work to fit around childcare arrangements or even another job. Some people decide to work two part time jobs as one may not be quite enough income but full time work is a bit too much for them. Working part time gives you the assurance of an income without you having to commit to 5 days a week. Whilst working part time as an employee you still build up holiday pay and have the perks that come with being employed as opposed to self employed where if you are sick or would like time off that has to come out of your own pocket.

It may be that you have been employed by a company on a full time basis but your circumstances have recently changed and you now need to only work a few days a week. You will find that many employers are quite open to this option especially if you are open and discuss the options with them.

Continuing Education After Employment

For many people, they view the need to continue to educate yourself before you reach a profession you can accept as something which wanes once that has been accomplished. This isn’t necessarily always the case though, as businesses can often expect you to continue to develop your understanding of their business and your profession. Using your own initiative to do this is always preferable to having your boss get you to do it, both for yourself and for them. Sometimes, your boss will be willing to cover the costs involved in something like this, which can cost quite a bit. From their perspective though, whatever course you complete will go a long ways toward improving your CV and qualifications, so mostly, you are the one who derives benefit from continuing to educate yourself after employment. The breadth of subjects which your employer will be prepared to pay for will be considerably smaller than the courses which you can still take to benefit yourself, and improve your opportunities, such as learning a language.

Research the job you have an interview for

There are a lot of things for you to consider before you turn up for an interview. One thing to remember, is that the person interviewing you has probably conducted, at least, dozens of interviews for the position your applying for, so they will probably be able to tell how prepared you are for it. One of the basic tenets of being a good interviewee is doing good research on both the job and the business that you are applying for a position at. If you are unclear about too many things which the interviewer asks you about, not only will you make a bad impression, but you will probably show yourself as being completely inept at the profession.

There are other things to consider when applying for a new position, but not researching can create a glaring hole in your repertoire, one which is not easy to compensate for. Of course, research is not going to be as important if the job doesn’t actually perform a unique task, but finding out what you can about the business and the job can really allow you to showcase your good characteristics when other opportunities to do so don’t arise.

Apprenticeships Are a Goodway to feel out your Carreer options

With increasing student fees, more and more young people are entering apprenticeships. When you complete an apprenticeship, you will usually be viewed as being more reliable than somebody with an equivalent university degree, as the amount of exposure you have had to how you will be working is greater. You can finish an apprenticeship, having earned money, qualifications, experience, and a good job record, in contrast to a university degree where you will spend a lot of money for an education of suspect real world value. Apprenticeships allow you to experience the world you will be working in, without making many commitments. The number of careers offering  apprenticeships has been increasing over the last few years, due to a shift in government focus. The government has acknowledged the value that an apprenticeship offers to somebody who doesn’t feel like they have enough support to attend university, and those who want to establish their independence as soon as possible.
