Is supply teaching a good career move?

Posted on June 25, 2021 at 3:01 pm

Short-term contracts and casual work. What does it do to your motivation and emotional health? Is it worth it?

Teachers who want to leave the profession sometimes tell me that they would like to try supply teaching, but they fear doing so will put them off even more. They wonder if the experience of working as a casual, wondering where their next contract is coming from, having to declare themselves as self-employed (and therefore pay twice as much tax) and constantly chasing regular paycheques will make them feel worse about paid employment in general – or at least paid school work?

Well, that’s actually a very negative way to look at it because it’s not often the case. It all depends on how supply teaching Bedford is set up and managed on a day to day basis. In the UK, we’re blessed to have plenty of agencies able to ensure there is a regular supply of work.

What are the benefits of supply teaching?

In a nutshell, supply teaching gives you the opportunity to work part-time in temporary roles with full support and supervision from an agency. Because of this, you can focus on one school until a regular post comes up although agencies never leave teachers without a job for long.

You also get to enjoy a better work-life balance. Supply teaching is very flexible too, so you can work whenever you like. You are technically your own boss! Therefore, you have no set hours, so there is more freedom to plan your own time. What’s more, it gives you the opportunity to really focus on your classroom practice as well as working with different colleagues and senior teachers every day.

Similarly, supply teaching can be very rewarding as you get to see the effect of your work immediately and know that you have had a positive impact. You also get to really engage with children and watch them learn – it’s a great feeling! Although supply can be hard to break into, it is well worth the initial effort as the benefits are huge. Once you establish yourself as a reliable supply teacher, schools will become loyal to you and offer solid contracts. Your agency may even prefer you over regular members of staff because there is no risk of sickness or holiday cover! Overall, if you want more freedom from your profession then supply teaching could be for you!

A statement that we are now constantly hearing is ‘help me find a job’. So, what better way to answer this than in a blog post, sharing our best tips for helping you to find a job!

Consider different industries
We commonly hear that people are struggling to find work when they are only looking within the industry they know. During these times where the struggle for work is high, considering other industries will help you. There will be other people looking for workers in other industries. Taking a chance on these may help you to find a new passion, and will place you in a stable job for the time being.

Be Open To A Pay Cut
While you may have come from a job that was very high pay, you need to be open to potentially taking a pay cut. Businesses across the nation are still struggling so may not be able to afford to match the pay you were on before. Being open to taking a pay cut will help you to gain employment as well as keeping regular pay.

Reach Out To People
Another way to gain employment is to simply reach out to people. Email companies telling them about what you can bring to your team. Don’t play the sympathy card, as everyone is in the same boat who are looking for work. Showcasing your skills and how you can help them will help you to gain employment. Companies may not realise they need someone like you until you step forward.

When you are struggling to find employment you should always consider these three things. But also remember to never give up. The day you stop may have been the day that the perfect opportunity rises.

Posted on August 23, 2020 at 11:04 am

There are many things which you need to consider before taking the step of becoming self-employed. Today we are going to look into reasons for and against going self-employed.

One of the benefits of becoming self-employed is that you are your own boss. You can choose how much you work and when you have time off. there is no approval needed.
However, when you are self-employed time is money. The more you work the more you earn. You won’t be entitled to holiday pay as you are working for yourself.
Also, you will not have a set wage each month. This can be a problem for some as some months you may earn less money. However, it does mean you can earn as much as you like.
Finally, the final benefit of this is you can make your business whatever you like. You can change and adapt to your needs and what you personally enjoy.

Posted on July 12, 2020 at 8:15 pm

Everyone has a dream career that they just wish to get in to. But not everyone knows how to get there. I’m here to give you some top tips on how to get there!

Firstly, do your research. Find out if you need a degree for your dream career. You may find ways into your career if you complete research. For example; going freelance, apprenticeship or working your way up in a company.
Be determined. Don’t give up hope. Just because you aren’t there yet doesn’t mean you will never get there. If companies see you giving up on your dream they may not want to hire you.
My best tip is networking. Reach out yourself to companies which you would want to work for. Send them a quick email with your CV, the may offer you an opportunity. The worst they can do is say no and you move on.

Is it time we stopped shaming the unemployed?

Posted on April 22, 2020 at 9:24 pm

When you’re unemployed and a person asks you what you do for work, you may almost feel a sense of guilt in saying you don’t have a job right now. But why is this the case? We’ve all been June, played at some stage, and it can happen to anyone, no matter how talented or ‘special’ they may be. Unemployment is real. It can be the result of redundancy, business closures, or lack of thriving business in a particular area. It’s almost never about the individual.

It’s about the market

The job market moves fast. Opporuntities opens nd closein the link of an eye. Our thoght is why feel shame? There is nothing wrong, spiteful or careless about being unemployed. It’s not likely that you wished to lose your job. You didn’t control the business circumstances that created downsizing and a lack of opportunities. You don’t control the demand in the economy for your services or goods. Okay so you don’t have a job right now. Fine. That doesn’t take away from your many skills and talents.

How to Find The Best Conference Venue

Posted on January 28, 2020 at 9:36 am

The process of finding the right venue for a conference can take time and effort because there is a wide range of options to choose from. Many people have ended up regretting the choice they made when it was too late. There is no need to go through this. Investing time and effort in the process will help you choose the best option out there. Below are some tips that will go a long way in helping you make the right choice.

Location
This is one of the most important things when it comes to choosing the best conference venue. You should choose a place where it will be convenient for people attending the conference, with free parking and easy transport links. Outdoor space is something people underestimate until the day of the conference. Getting a venue with outdoor space gives you a little more options and space.

Budget
Before you start the process of searching conference venues London, you need to know your budget. When you have a budget, you will be able to filter the number of options you have, and you don’t have to be tempted with venues that are much more than what you can afford. You should not choose venues that are cheaper because they tend to compromise on services or you might have to deal with hidden costs that add up. When looking for a conference venue, always look at the value. Go through reviews to know what past clients think about the venue.

Facilities and Services
A good venue will offer you great facilities and services that come as a standard. You will have an easier time planning for the conference because most of the things are provided by the venue. If the delegates are going to travel from far, then you should look at venues that provide accommodation. There is no need to have them looking for accommodation in a new place they don’t know much about.

Space
Know the number of delegates you are expecting so you can know the type and size of space you are going to need. If it is a small meeting, then a more intimate venue might be the best option. It the event is large, you need to choose a venue providing meeting spaces with breakout rooms, accommodation, restaurants, and outside space.

The tips above will go a long way in helping you choose the best conference venue.
